Closing the Gender Wage Gap: Robert Morris University Closing the Gender Wage Gap | Robert Morris University

The gender pay gap has been reduced in the past decade—but it certainly hasn’t disappeared. Women still earn about 77 cents for every dollar that is paid to a man, even though women now earn the majority of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Leveling the Wage Gap

However, progress continues to be made, especially in these careers:

  • STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) jobs for women are one of the brighter areas for those seeking sustainable, good-paying jobs. The U.S. Department of Commerce says in a recent study that STEM jobs for women pay 33 percent more money than women who hold jobs in non-STEM areas, which also means that the gender pay gap isn’t as wide for those in these areas. STEM jobs include computer programmers, actuaries, mechanical engineers, and doctors.
  • Elementary, middle school, and secondary school female teachers also earn close to 94% of their male counterparts’ wages. Although women greatly outnumber men in teaching children and teenagers, they are more likely to take time off to raise their family and lose seniority, and so often make less money when they return to the classroom.

Notice that while the gender pay gap isn’t as pronounced in these careers, the difference between them is that STEM workplaces generally have more men, while secondary (and especially) elementary education claims more women.
