All the News Moon Can Use

Pittsburgh -- Need to get the scoop on Moon Township news? Check out RMU’s newest online media source, Moon News Cloud, which gives RMU communications students hands-on experience to boot.
MNC is a local online news portal for the Moon Township that offers news, features, sports, and photo galleries. RMU students taking Journalism Production, News Broadcasting 2, and Sports Journalism classes are assigned to write for the site along with members of the RMU Sentry Newspaper.
The site is funded by an $8,000 grant from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, which was won by RMU Associate Professor of Communication Anthony Moretti.
“They award eight to 10 grants per year and we were fortunate enough to get one this academic year. That covers a webmaster, promotional opportunities for the grant, any travel that would be associated for the grant, the domain and other issues with starting the website and keeping it functional,” said Moretti.
Other faculty involved in the project include Heather Pinson, interim head of the Department of Communication, Michael DiLauro, director of the Academic Media Center, and Derya Jacobs, vice provost for research and graduate study.
The purpose of this project is to utilize the student journalists in professional experience by sending them off campus and having them communicate and write about news throughout the community.
“We want to make sure the RMU student community understands the Moon community and vice versa. It’s hard for students to know what’s going on around the community when they live on campus,” said Moretti.
RMU will use its classes and curriculum to push journalists out into the community and give them real-world reporting experience.
“I tell the students ‘play to your strengths’. If you really want to be photojournalists then let’s do a lot of stories with you as a photojournalist. If you want to be a broadcaster then lets do most of your stories as video pieces,” said Moretti.
The website has been running since January and can be seen at www.moonnewscloud.com.
