When deciding on a college to attend, Chris Lockhart ’13 knew that he didn’t want to be just another number. He wanted a school where the professors knew his name…a place where he could receive one-on-one help if necessary. Looking back on his time at RMU, Lockhart knows he couldn’t have made a better choice.

“The small school environment really gives off a warm and personal vibe,” said Lockhart, who majored in actuarial science, one of RMU’s most demanding degree programs. “I loved walking around campus and always running into someone I knew. It allows you to feel accepted and gives you the opportunity to have an impact on the lives of others.”

With help from his professors and the RMU Actuarial Science Club, Lockhart landed an internship with The Hartford insurance company, which hired him full time when he graduated.

“Receiving an actuarial internship is one of the most important steps in becoming an actuary,” he said. “RMU built the foundation for me to receive an internship and a full time offer at The Hartford.”

Lockhart praises his professors – Leonard Asimow, David Hudak, and Chris Groendyke -- for preparing the actuarial students for their preliminary exams, which are required by the Society of Actuaries (SOA).  He recently passed his fifth and final exam with The Hartford and credits his professors and what he learned in class.

Lockhart also credits RMU’s Communication Skills program for preparing him for his internship interview. Not only was he able to prove his actuarial capabilities but was also able to prove himself as an effective communicator.

“In order to be an effective communicator, you must first learn the basics of communication, as RMU taught me. This can make or break a company’s decision to hire you,” said Lockhart.

Along with being an active member of the Actuarial Science Club, Lockhart was a brother of Alpha Chi Rho and a member of the women’s basketball practice squad. By getting involved in campus groups, he made friends and memories that he is sure will last a lifetime.

A memory that will last forever for Lockhart is when RMU basketball beat Kentucky. “We believed, Robert Morris University believed. That is a bond that will never be broken with my classmates.”
