The goal of this category is to encourage and assist students to interact with a wide variety of people from culturally diverse backgrounds. By understanding and appreciating other cultures, students can be better prepared for the culturally diverse workforce, of which they will be a part after graduation.
To achieve this goal, students are encouraged to participate in the out-of-class learning that will immerse them in a different culture other than their own for a minimum of one week. This immersion will help the student understand the social, political, spiritual, cultural, economic and environmental aspects of that part of the world. Students are encouraged to present their experience, at their discretion, in conjunction with the sponsoring mentor and the Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS).
Examples of activities that satisfy this category include:
Students who participate in activities that are coordinated by the OIPS, such as a study abroad trip or a faculty-led trip, will receive automatic approval for their Category 2 SET activity.
To receive SET approval for a Category 2 activity that is not coordinated by the OIPS, students must first request pre-approval by completing the SET Activity Approval Form and submitting it to the OIPS. Students must obtain pre-approval from OIPS prior to the commencement of non-credit Category 2 activities. Once the activity has been completed, the OIPS must then submit the SET Activity Approval Form with final approval to Dr. Shari Payne, Dean of Engaged Learning.
