The RMU Library’s current electronic resources budget has been decreased fairly drastically for the 2013-2014 budget year.
While this is the first dramatic budget decrease the Library’s specific e-resources budget has been dealt in recent history, we have expanded our electronic resource offerings every year, in the face of a continuously flat budget and average industry price increases of more than 6% annually.
In light of our success dealing with these more minimal budget challenges in the past, we feel optimistic that we will be able to continue to offer essential resources and to develop greater flexibility with our access to electronic resources for the RMU community.
While analysis of database usage statistics is helping guide our renewal vs. cancellation decisions, our main objective in this process is to minimize the potential impact of database cancellations on student and faculty research. Offering unique content that is specifically tied to the RMU curricula is a top priority.

How will these cancellations impact me in any way if I never use the library?
Keep in mind: If you access journal articles on campus primarily through Google Scholar or Google, you do in fact use the Library. Many of the articles you access through Google are only available to you because the Library subscribes to them through a specific database or journal subscription. The Library pays for, and configures your Google Scholar access to, these published journal articles.
RMU Library enables Google Scholar to include our online holdings in their search results. Google Scholar may be how you find online journal articles, but for the majority of these articles, you are only able to access them because of the Library’s online subscriptions. Once we cancel database subscriptions, access to journal articles in those databases through Google Scholar also ceases.
