Kristal Wiggins, a senior management major, has been awarded the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) Next Generation $4,500 stipend, created in part to encourage students of color to enter the nonprofit sector. Kristal is the eighth RMU student to be chosen for this honor through a competitive national selection process; she is the university’s first student of color to receive the award. All NLA students are required to complete a 300-hour internship at a nonprofit organization. Wiggins is currently meeting with various nonprofit leaders in her hometown of Baltimore so that she can select a site for this summer. Read more about Kristal Wiggins.

-- RMU is hosting the Southwestern Pennsylvania Regional Qualifying FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge, at which teams of high school students will design, build, and program a robot to complete a sports-related task. This year’s competition, “Bowled Over,” takes place Feb. 11 at the School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (SEMS) in the John Jay Center. Google Pittsburgh and the SEMS Research and Outreach Center are this year’s event sponsors. Read more about the FIRST Tech Challenge at RMU.

EDITOR'S NOTE -- This is the final Minuteman of 2011. Have a safe and happy holiday season, and let's do it again in '12.

*WELLNESS TIP* Try doing wall pushups to strengthen your arms, shoulders, and chest. They are less challenging than classic pushups and won't require you to get down on the floor. Just be sure to stand a little farther than arm's length from a wall and that your palms lay flat against the wall at about shoulder height and shoulder-width apart.
