Friday, December 7, 2012

Pittsburgh -- Robert Morris University women's basketball coach Sal Buscaglia is pleased to announce the signing of five talented student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Guards Anna-Niki Stamolamprou (Thessaloniki, Greece / PAOK), Emily Puskarich (Wheeling, W.Va. / Wheeling Park) and Janee Brown (Mitchellville, Md. / Academy of the Holy Cross) have joined with forwards Rafaella-Loukia Angelidou (Thessaloniki, Greece / Greek National U-16) and Cassie Oursler (Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) in their commitments to continue playing basketball at Robert Morris.

"My staff and I are excited to attract five outstanding student-athletes to Robert Morris," said Buscaglia. "We believe each of them, all who will be freshman in 2013 and therefore four-year players, will develop into excellent Division I players. With five freshmen coming in and having three freshmen playing many minutes this year, we are confident that these eight players can be the core for future success while bringing their outstanding attitudes and high-level academic achievement."

The balanced class features three guards and two forwards along with three domestic student-athletes and two members of the Greek National Team.

"We have built a great winning tradition here, qualifying for two NCAA tournaments and one WNIT tournament in the last five years as well as finishing in the final four of the very competitive Northeast Conference seven of the last eight years. Having young players with the character of these five and the current team members will ensure ongoing success in the long term in every area," said Buscaglia.

Stamolamprou is a 5'7" point guard who most recently played for the Greek National Under-20 Team before her 16th birthday helping the squad to the B Division title and promotion at the European Championships. She was also a member of the Under 18 team where she averaged 16.3 points and 2.5 assists per game, finishing third among all players in scoring. Stamolamprou shot 37.8 percent on three-pointers. She averaged 9.5 points and 1.5 assists for the Under-20 team. She tallied 26 points in the team's semifinal game and averaged 17.7 points in their playoff games. In 2011 as a member of the Under-16 squad, she scored at a 17.1 point per game clip.

"Anna is one of the best guards in Europe," said Buscaglia. "She has the skills of a point and two-guard as she can shoot and pass. Anna's high-level European experience will prove to be very beneficial as she plays on the Division I level. She reminds me a great deal of (current RMU junior forward) Artemis Spanou, but only at the one-two position."

Brown is a 5'6" guard who has played for the Academy of Holy Cross. ESPNHS Girl's Basketball grades her out at an 84 and lists her at 72nd according to their position ranks. Her Holy Cross team went 23-7 with her leading the way as a junior.

"Quick, athletic and fast characterizes Janee." said Buscaglia. "She brings athleticism to our team as she can run and play aggressive on-the-ball defense. When we saw her in AAU's, we were amazed at her quickness and her ability to get to the basket."

Angelidou is a 6'1" forward who most recently played for the Greek National Under 16 team.

"Strong and aggressive is what Rafaella brings to Robert Morris. She is a fierce competitor who will not back down. Rafaella is the blue-collar type of player which every team needs."

Puskarich is a 5'8" guard who was a finalist for Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior at Wheeling Park High School in Wheeling, W.Va. As a junior, she averaged 19.0 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals while shooting 49 percent from the field, including 37 percent on three-point tries. She is a three-time all-state and all-section selection.

"Emily brings a lot to the table with the range on her shot is her number-one attribute," said Buscaglia. "We need more depth in the perimeter-scoring area and Emily bring this to us."

Oursler is a 6'3" forward who was named to the All-Western New York second team and was also an all-state selection following her junior season. A member of the varsity team at Grand Island since her freshman season, she helped the Vikings to three section championships. As a junior, she averaged 16.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 58.5 percent from the fllor.

"With the graduation of Anna Gailite, there is a need that we are thrilled we were able to fill with the signing of Cassie. With dedication and hard work, Cassie can develop into a very good post player for us. She runs the floor very well and has showed the potential to contribute very quickly to our team," said Buscaglia.
