What I'm Reading, June 5

Monday, June 5, 2017

Who are your role models? Where do you find inspiration and the will to succeed? Those are questions are the heart of three of our four articles in this edition of “What I’m Reading.” And with summer at our doorstep, what better place to be than Pittsburgh, which continues to bask in the national spotlight?

“Bruh”

Having had the pleasure of hosting Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as our commencement speaker last month, I had the good fortune of meeting one of his most talented and thoughtful players at a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey game -- linebacker Ryan Shazier. Ryan's essay about growing up with alopecia, a condition resulting in the inability to grow hair, inspires, entertains, and informs all of us. It also makes us look forward to the next Steelers vs. Cowboys game!

“Freeman A. Hrabowksi III on the Value of Resilience”

President Freeman Hrabowski from the University of Maryland Baltimore County has been a mentor and friend for many years. A brilliant, visionary leader, he reminds us that nothing is more important than hard work.

“Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Oprah Winfrey All Use the 5-Hour rule”

As noted in this article, reading, reflecting and experimenting serve as the pathway to improvement, deep learning and, ultimately, success. The writer also includes a reading list of the most recommended books by CEOs, entrepreneurs, and other leaders, so be sure to pack a few books for the beach.

“Built on Steel, Pittsburgh Now Thrives on Culture”

The beach is great, of course, but don’t overlook Pittsburgh as a summer destination. Great food, culture, places to stay and attractions...Pittsburgh is simply a great, affordable place to visit!
