| Studies lead to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree with a concentration in marketing.
Overview
The marketing concentration at Robert Morris University offers
students a comprehensive overview of marketing principles and
practices. The program features a balanced blend of professional
application and intellectual knowledge with a curriculum designed
to respond to the ever-changing needs of business. Students receive
an education that is focused in business and enhanced by general
studies. This multidisciplinary approach provides a solid foundation
in marketing while including classes to complement individual
interests and backgrounds. |
|
Classroom experiences are augmented by opportunities to
participate in internship programs and to study abroad through
one of several international programs. The marketing faculty
encourages students to pursue industry-specific and career-specific
work through supervised independent study projects.
Graduates of the program pursue professional positions in both the
public and private sectors. While some students secure positions
with major corporations and businesses, many choose to work in
small business and entrepreneurial settings.
Objectives
The B.S.B.A. with a concentration in marketing enables students to:
- Understand marketing principles and practices;
- Effectively apply marketing theories to real-world situations;
- Apply qualitative and quantitative analytical skills in business decision-making;
- Communicate effectively and professionally;
- Employ leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively manage;
- Utilize information technology for business solutions; and
- Comprehend and analyze the impact of dynamic global markets and social forces in the exchange of goods and services.
Curriculum
The 126-credit hour curriculum has six components:
- Robert Morris University Core - 42 credits
These are the traditional liberal arts requirements of the
University. Studies in humanities, communications skills, and
social, behavioral, natural and quantitative sciences are included.
- Non-Business Requirements - 6 credits
This component consists of required courses in statistics and ethics.
- Business Foundations Courses - 27 credits
These are required of all students earning a B.S.B.A. degree and
include courses in accounting, finance, marketing, management
and other business administration areas.
- Concentration (Marketing) - 24 credits
This is the major field of study and includes courses in
advertising/sales promotion, marketing research, sales strategies,
consumer behavior, strategic marketing management, and
technology topics and issues. The provision of two electives
permits students to extend their knowledge of some particular
interest in the marketing field.
- Business Electives - 12 credits
Students may select any four courses within the School of Business
offerings to broaden their skills in some business area of interest.
- Non-Business Electives - 15 credits
Students may select five courses offered outside the School of
Business to broaden their skills in some area of interest.
Faculty
The Marketing Department has a diverse faculty with experience
in both the public and private sectors. The faculty is dedicated to
helping students to discover their potential in this exciting field
by integrating hands-on experiences into the classroom. Faculty
members are actively involved in the profession, serving as
consultants, guest speakers, and textbook authors and reviewers.
Full-time faculty members are cited frequently by local and
national media as experts in the marketing field.
Internship Opportunities
Marketing students are strongly encouraged to participate in at
least one internship experience. Internships provide students with
valuable work experience and lead to assistance in career planning,
employer references and full-time job opportunities. Students are
eligible for internships after the completion of 75 credits and may
participate in more than one experience.
Career Opportunities
Marketing graduates are prepared for a variety of careers, such as
sales, sales management, advertising, research, marketing consulting,
marketing management, public relations, communications and
retailing. In addition, the program provides excellent preparation
for graduate study.
The marketing field is a very competitive one. Students must have
a strong educational background and solid work experience to
obtain an entry-level position. Employers are especially interested
in entry-level employees who are enthusiastic, willing to work
hard, have good communication skills and are problem solvers.
The best way for students to demonstrate such skills is through
practical work experience obtained through volunteer work,
internships or part-time jobs.
Student Organizations
RMU sponsors an award-winning student chapter of the American
Marketing Association (AMA), which is respected as the leading
organization for marketing professionals. Membership benefits
include professional networking, seminars, internship opportunities,
social activities and community service activities. Students have
the opportunity to develop leadership skills and acquire valuable
