| Studies lead to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
(B.S.B.A.) degree with a concentration in management.
Program Overview
The management concentration at Robert Morris University features
a balanced blend of professional application and intellectual
knowledge, with a curriculum designed to respond to the everchanging
needs of business. Students receive an education that
is focused in business and enhanced by general studies. This
multidisciplinary approach provides a solid foundation in business
theory and practice while including classes to complement
individual interests and backgrounds. |
|
Classroom experiences are augmented by opportunities to
participate in internship programs and to study abroad through
one of several international programs. The management faculty
encourages students to pursue industry-specific and career-specific
work through supervised independent study projects.
Graduates of the program pursue professional positions in both the
public and private sectors. While some students secure positions
with major corporations and businesses, many choose to work in
small business and entrepreneurial settings.
Program Objectives
The B.S.B.A. with a concentration in management enables
students to:
- Understand the impact of the management of business on the environment;
- Respond to civic and community concerns;
- Assume a leadership position within an organization;
- Adapt successfully to changes in the organizational climate and employment demands;
- Demonstrate self-awareness and appreciation for the benefits of individual differences;

Curriculum
The 126-credit hour curriculum has six components:
- Robert Morris University Core - 42 credits
These are the traditional liberal arts requirements of the
University. Studies in humanities, communications skills, and
social, behavioral, natural and quantitative sciences are included.
- Non-Business Requirements - 6 credits
This component consists of required courses in statistics and ethics.
- Business Foundations Courses - 27 credits
These are required of all students earning a B.S.B.A. degree and
include courses in accounting, finance, marketing, management
and other business administration areas.
- Concentration (Management) - 24 credits
This is the major field of study and includes courses in
compensation management, conflict resolution, human resource
management, labor management relations, organizational
behavior and supervisory skills. The provision of two electives
permits students to extend their knowledge of some particular
interest in the management field.
- Business Electives - 12 credits
Students may select any four courses within the School of Business
offerings to broaden their skills in some business area of interest.
- Non-Business Electives - 15 credits
Students may select five courses offered outside the School of
Business to broaden their skills in some area of interest.
Faculty
Because Robert Morris University is primarily a teaching
institution, all classes are taught by faculty members who are
experts in their fields.
The management faculty brings strong academic credentials and a
wealth of real-world experience to the classroom. Faculty members
are involved in a number of corporate and civic activities. In
addition to authoring papers and making presentations to local,
national and international management audiences, they have
received acknowledgment in leading management textbooks.
Faculty members are very student-oriented, sponsoring student
organizations, hosting students in their homes and promoting
students for national recognition in Who's Who in American Colleges
and Universities. Because of their active interest in their students,
management faculty members are frequently cited for their roles
as outstanding student mentors.
Student Organizations
A variety of activities and organizations are available to
management students. Students may participate in the Society
for the Advancement of Management (SAM), which guides
students toward careers in management. The chapter travels to
the SAM national conference to participate in the annual student
case competition.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) provides
valuable networking opportunities as well as guidance for
certification exams for those interested in a career in human resource
management. Students attend the SHRM national conference to
attend workshops and participate in a student case competition.
The RMU chapter of American Humanics allows students to
explore careers in nonprofit management while providing service
opportunities in the local community. Students attend the annual
American Humanics Management Institute to learn from and
network with nonprofit leaders.
RMU also sponsors chapters of Alpha Chi and Sigma Beta Delta,
two national honor societies.
Internship Opportunities
Management students are strongly encouraged to participate in
at least one internship experience. Internships provide students
with valuable work experience and lead to assistance in career
planning, employer references and full-time job opportunities.
Students are eligible for internships after the completion of 75
credits and may participate in more than one experience.
Career Opportunities
Management graduates can be found working in human resources,
sales and sales management, corporate training, nonprofit
management, purchasing, labor relations, supervision,
administration, education and banking. The management faculty
works closely with RMU's Career Center to help students reach their
career goals. They help students to secure internships and positions
by writing letters of recommendation, reviewing re´sume´s, discussing
the interview process and teaching them how to utilize professional
networks. Additionally, the program provides an excellent
foundation for students who are interested in graduate study.
