Systems Engineer/Senior Systems Engineer
The Human Resources Department announces the position of Systems Engineer/Senior Systems Engineer, reporting to the Director, Enterprise Server Systems, in the Department of Information Technology. This position is responsible for independently installing, configuring, tuning and upgrading server equipment and server operating systems for multiple hardware platforms and operating systems and to mentor less experienced personnel.
Responsibilities include: assume primary responsibility for supporting and maintaining assigned Tier 1 and Tier 2 production systems running UNIX/Linux/VMware, Oracle/MS SQL Server, and SAN technology; audit the work of less experienced personnel and provide technology coaching and mentoring; architect/install and configure new server hardware and software following departmental policies; develop backup schedules in conjunction with Applications personnel; write complex shell scripts to automate processes and for problem resolution; maintain meticulous documentation of systems configurations and procedures; assist customers in diagnosing application issues and work with customers to schedule application of patches, software updates and hardware upgrades; take a lead role/participate in the development and testing of disaster recovery processes and procedures; monitor assigned systems, communicate capacity or performance issues and take appropriate actions regarding emergency procedures; contact hardware and software vendors to resolve hardware outages and software defects, and follow problems through to resolution; at Senior level, develop department standards for server configurations working closely with the Director, Information Security on patch management strategy and incorporating industry best practices; and perform other duties as assigned.
