ELIT1090 - Children Of Abraham
Fall 2011
This course will first examine how the three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, make use of the narrative of Abraham to explore the progression of history as the ethical unfolding of divine revelation. Then, using Jerusalem as a semiotic key, the focus will turn to how these three religions express their own unique perspective on the divine will as each wrestle with the ?terror of history.? These issues will be investigated through an explication of texts including, but not limited to, the holy scriptures of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and the symbols and architecture of Israel that locate the center of the universe in this volatile region. Through a close reading of these texts and their synthesis of a myriad of theological perspectives, a deeper relationship between these influential religions will be explored. Ultimately, this course is intended to provide students with a semiotic grammar for their own investigation into the symbols and symbol systems alive in modern Israel.
