ENGO3010 - Modern English Grammar/Editing

Fall 2011

This course is designed to integrate the study of the structure of English with work on grammar and mechanics. The course incorporates traditional, structural, and transformational theories of grammar so as to help students to better understand their language intuitions and instincts through a variety of ways of understanding and explaining English grammar and usage. The course avoids role learning and engages students in analytical thinking; it encourages learning concepts through prototypical cases and applying these cases to the analysis of the usual and exceptional. The course emphasizes an understanding sentence patterns, word forms and functions, style and meaning, grammatical terminology, and usage and correctness. 3 credits
Prerequisites: COSK2220 or COSO2220 and any ELIT or LITO course
