MBAD6550 - Health Care Finance

Spring 2014

Health Care Finance introduces the concepts of sources of funding for health care and the application of those funds to pay for the delivery of health care. Topics include an overview of health care funding in the public and private sectors, the concept of third party payment or reimbursement; and "alternative payment systems" such as self insurance, capitation and discounted care. The course will include discussion about issues related to the uninsured and the implications of uninsured patients for clinical practice. The course will give students an overview of the capital asset evaluation and acquisition process. Students will also gain an appreciation for and understanding of the budget and accounting processes involved in the delivery of health services and practical knowledge relating to managing budgets. The final portion of the course will consider the future of health care finance including national health insurance issues and payment for performance.
