SOSC1010 - Intro Women´s & Gender Studies

Summer 2018

This course will introduce students to the interdisciplinary field of Women's and Gender Studies. It will explore key concepts in gender theory, emphasizing the social construction and historical development of "masculinity" and "femininity." It will also consider how gender intersects with other aspects of identity and social categorization, like race, class, nationality, ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation. This course covers critical and canonical contributions in the field of feminist theory; classical and modern theorists will be included. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking regarding debates on sex and gender; the course will includes topics such as socialization, identity, culture, gendered violence, work, family, bodies, activism, and social movements.
