Acquaints students with what is required for a doctoral dissertation and the necessary associated research process. The course includes three (3) threads, or major areas of study. The first provides the structure and groundwork for a workable dissertation. The second focuses on identifying an appropriate topic of interest for a dissertation and beginning the development of a related and relevant review of the literature. The third course thread bridges viable dissertation topics with concise problem statements and potential research methods. Students complete an extensive annotated bibliography and a scholarly argumentative paper, both based on a viable dissertation topic approved by the course instructor. This course is a prerequisite for Dissertation Seminar I, dedicated to the process of writing Chapter 1 of the student?s dissertation. 3 Credits

This course focuses on the development of effective, practical techniques for establishing curricula for use in a standards-based education environment. The course examines the theoretical dimensions of curriculum development. Topics such as taxonomies, objectives, and lesson planning are addressed to show their connection to curriculum development and outcomes-based educational planning efforts. Assessment related topics such as reliability and validity of assessments, constructing classroom tests, constructing performance tasks and scoring rubrics, formative assessment in the classroom, and the uses and interpretation of test results will be addressed. This course posits that the context most conducive for inspiring individual and organizational development is the learning community. Principal candidates will engage in the completion of specific leadership competencies and experiences designed to equip them with those skills and strategies necessary to effectively initiate, facilitate and guide school improvement efforts through the development of professional learning communities. Candidates will accomplish these leadership competencies during a 90-hour internship in an elementary or secondary school.
