METE4999 - Climatology

Spring 2024

This is an advanced course in meteorology and reviews climatology, the study of the long-term state or condition of the Earth?s atmosphere. The course examines the Earth?s atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and biosphere and their interaction to produce the planet?s climate system. The role of the Earth-Sun system in climate is examined. Earth?s current climatic regions are identified and discussed as are elements of paleoclimatology, the study of the planet?s past climatic condition. Properties of various geogenic, biogenic and anthropogenic atmospheric gases, particulates and aerosols that affect climate, both currently and in the past, are examined. The effects of climate on the biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and humankind are discussed. Anthropogenic factors affecting the current and future state of the Earth?s atmosphere are reviewed. Techniques used to collect and analyze climatological data are reviewed. Course includes a recitation section which includes hands-on demonstrations of topics reviewed in lecture and experimentation utilizing the analytical techniques and equipment reviewed in the course Credits: 3
