This foundational course explores the leadership qualities required of executives in healthcare organizations committed to achieving value-based performance goals. It focuses on approaches to leadership in a variety of organizational contexts and takes a lerner-centered approach to supporting each student in identifying his or her strengths and leadership assets. Understanding the leadership process and development of self-awareness and skills necessary to lead effectively are emphasized. Particular attention is placed on the ethical considerations of the decision-making process and management of major strategic and organizational change initiatives in a post-Affordable Care Act healthcare landscape. Students will learn how to manage the ethical issues related to administrative and biomedical problems resulting from financial constraints, advances in technology, and population-based accountable care models of healthcare delivery. Case studies, discussion, role playing, and guest speakers provide students with new insights into the roles, challenges, and critical decision-making skills of executives in regard to such issues as performance improvement, mergers and acquisitions, consolidations, restructuring, practice management, strategic planning, technology use, and mHealth. 2 Credits

Healthcare Finance I: Introduction to Healthcare Financial Analysis and Decision-Making. This course introduces students to the concepts of Healthcare Financial Analysis and Decision-Making. Basic financial accounting principles provide an understanding of the language, concepts, processes, and key functions of accounting and financial management. Basic managerial accounting principles are reviewed including cost accounting, budgeting at the department level, and an understanding of the roles of budget development and management as well as the role of fiscal control in sustaining the financial strength of healthcare organizations. Core concepts and practical applications in the healthcare revenue cycle and financial statement analysis important to health care managers, will be the focus. 3 Credits

Healthcare Finance II: Financial Analysis and Management for Healthcare Executives. This course builds on student competencies of financial analysis and management in healthcare settings at the level of a health care executive with anticipated profit/loss responsibility. Additional depth of accounting principles are pursued, leading to an organization-level understanding of the concepts of financial management in challenging reimbursement and expense management of a healthcare organization. Financial analysis and managerial accounting principles are applied. Deeper financial statement analysis, management of working capital, funding sources and debt financing will be addressed. Additionally, principles of long-term capital structure and decision analysis techniques will be explored.

Healthcare Policy, Law, and Politics - This course examines the impact of health policy and politics at national, state and local levels. Students will assess the policy influences on access to health care, including the cost and quality of this care. Students will identify the roles of government institutions, decision-making processes, and individuals that create health policy. Pertinent health policy will be analyzed in terms of variance between original policy intent, legislative and regulatory modifications. These include the recognition of situations that call for bargaining, the elements of bargaining, and processes to analyze, plan and implement successful negotiations. Students will learn to integrate analytical skills, negotiation techniques and conflict resolution strategies in healthcare organizations. Reviews of case studies, role playing and group discussions will strengthen the students? skills in conflict resolution and negotiations. Student will also explore covert and overt causes of conflict, methods of analyzing conflicts, and approaches to prevent or resolve conflict.
