Survey of World Religions explores the basic nature of religion by examining the major "living" world religions and their cultural manifestations. Close attention will be paid to the various religions' doctrine, symbols, stories, institutions, and rituals. This course enables students to identify and distinguish different systems of world renowned formal thinking and to survey the development of these formal philosophers. Students analyze these systems through oral presentations and in writing; analyze basic political concepts derived from these philosophers; and develop appreciation for various cultural values and mores emanating from these philosophers. 3 Credits

This course examines major ethical theories and their implications. Students learn the basic concepts of utilitarian, deontological, and virtue ethics as well as modern responses to comprehensive ethical theories including ethical egoism and relativism. In addition to learning the basic concepts, students will analyze popular cultural narratives, including plays, news stories, advertisements, and movies as illustrations of the major ethical theories.
