Author/PI: Derya A Jacobs;   David Dryer

Date(s): 08/01/2000 - 07/30/2002

Category: Engineering

Type: Grant Awarded

Description: The proposal was awarded by NASA Langley Research Center in the amount of $106,945. The partnering institution is Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. The Systems Integration Branch at NASA Langley Research Center is responsible for the verification of the Airport Safety Modeling Data (ASMD) that will be used as the source of terrain data for a visual system. The Department of Defense and the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) released ASMD to be used for the development of a visual system for aircraft pilots. ASMD was constructed from NIMA digital terrain elevation data. Identification and characterization of the error in ASMD is an important element of its use and application. Future use of this data may involve applications that require transmission of digital images to the cockpit. The error pattern recognition capabilities of several tools are tested: artificial neural networks, traditional statistical correlation model(s), and multivariate methods.
