The goal of this category is to foster active civic engagement on the part of students, because the university views engaging in volunteer community service as essential to developing well rounded citizen-leaders. Volunteer community service includes donating one’s time and talents in partnership with myriad nonprofit organizations whose diverse missions address critical needs. The volunteer service may take place on campus, when appropriate.

The 30 hours can be served at more than one pre-approved service site and can be spread out over the four years of undergraduate study. Service sites and Alternative Break opportunities must be pre-approved by the Office of Student Civic Engagement (OSCE).
Community service completed as part of a judicial sanction imposed by the University does not qualify.
To receive SET approval for a Category 4 activity that is not coordinated by the OSCE, students must first request pre-approval by completing the SET Activity Approval Form and submitting it to the OSCE. Students must obtain pre-approval from OSCE prior the commencement of independent Category 4 activities. Once the activity has been completed, students must provide documentation to the OSCE indicating that the 30 hours of service were successfully completed. This documentation must be in the form of a letter from the service partner(s) on the service partner’s letterhead, signed by the service partner’s staff member. The OSCE must then submit the SET Activity Approval Form with final approval to Dr. Shari Payne, Dean of Engaged Learning.
