Ambassador Robin R. Sanders ALA Scholarship to South Africa

 This scholarship will support one sophomore or junior RMU student to participate in a 5 week summer internship program in Johannesburg, South Africa (end June through end July, 2018). This international experiential learning opportunity is working with young leaders (ages 15-18) from all over Africa who are participating in the prestigious African Leadership Academy (ALA)’s Global Scholars Program (GSP). Accommodations and meals for the RMU intern will be provided on the ALA campus.

ALA is located on a beautiful, large, modern campus located in a quiet suburb about 35 minutes outside of Johannesburg, a sophisticated metropolis of over 8 million people and the economic hub of South Africa.

Preferred Student Profile:
  • Sophomore or junior standing (end spring 2018)
  • Good academic standing
  • All majors considered but special interest in engineering, communications, or business backgrounds
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability/ willingness to work on a team with people from diverse backgrounds and other countries
  • Experience working with young people
  • Mature and dependable

Nominations for students from underrepresented populations in study abroad are encouraged, including, but not limited to:

  • Women of color
  • Racial or ethnic minorities
  • Pell Grant recipients
  • STEM majors
  • First generation college students

Nominees must be available to be interviewed by the Scholarship Committee on Thursday, March 1, 2018 to determine the Awardee.
