Troubleshooting

Problem: My computer/part of my computer will not turn on.
Solution: Make sure that your power cables are securely plugged into the wall and computer/monitor/etc. If the power cables are plugged into a power strip, make sure that the power strip is turned on as well.

Computers/parts can be designed to be very quiet (if not completely silent); check the body of the computer/monitor itself for lights that may indicate that it is receiving electricity.

Problem: A part of my computer (i.e. keyboard) does not work.
Solution: Make sure that the computer part is securely plugged into the computer and, if a power cable is used to feed power to the part, that it is plugged into the wall/power strip as well.

Problem: My computer is running slow, what is wrong?
Solution: There may be too many applications running at once. Save your work and exit the applications you are not actively using.

There may be spyware and adware installed on your computer. Obtain and install a copy of Spybot and Ad-aware on your computer to get rid of them in order to release system resources being used to run those processes.

There may be a computer virus preventing your system from functioning properly. Remove the virus by updating your anti-virus software's virus definitions, and then run a full system virus scan.

Problem: I cannot connect to the internet.
Solution: Network connections in the residence halls use RJ-45 ethernet connections. Make sure that you are using a network cable of that specification and that it is a 'patch', not a 'cross-over', cable.

Make sure that your network cable is plugged securely into the wall and your computer.

Be sure that you have properly registered your PC by completing the ResNet Registration process.
