RMU Alumni, a Former Ambassador and a CEO, Will Address Graduates at RMU’s 86th Commencement Ceremonies

Pittsburgh – Robert Morris University’s commencement ceremonies this year will feature addresses by a former ambassador and a Fortune 500 CEO – both of whom are also RMU alumni.

Robin Renee Sanders, former U.S. ambassador to Nigeria, will speak at RMU’s graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 6, at 4 p.m. in the Sewall Center Arena. Sanders earned her doctorate in information systems and communications from Robert Morris in 2010.

Speaking the next day at RMU’s undergraduate commencement ceremony will be Richard Harshman, a 1978 Robert Morris graduate and the president, chairman and CEO of Allegheny Technologies Inc. Harshman, a member of the RMU Board of Trustees, earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from RMU.

The undergraduate ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, in the Sewall Center Arena. Also speaking at that ceremony will be graduating senior Cara D. Pattinato, president of the RMU Class of 2011. Both ceremonies will be streamed live at online at www.rmu.edu/live year marks RMU’s 86th commencement.

“How fitting for our newest graduates to hear first-hand how a Robert Morris education can change lives,” said RMU President Gregory G. Dell’Omo. “Rich and Robin exemplify Robert Morris’s values not just through their professional success, but also through their service to their community and to their country.”

Harshman worked his way through RMU, then joined Teledyne Inc. as an auditor upon graduation. Teledyne became part of Allegheny Technologies in 1996, and Harshman has held several increasingly important roles at the company. He previously was chief financial officer, and in August he was named president and chief operating officer. Harshman will become CEO and chairman in May.

Sanders is a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service. She was ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 2007-2010. Previously she was the ambassador to the Republic of Congo, and her other positions include international advisor and deputy commandant of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
