Largest Class in RMU History Set to Receive Diplomas
Pittsburgh, April 3, 2014 – The largest graduating class in Robert Morris University’s 93-year history will cross the stage to receive diplomas at this year’s commencement ceremonies, May 9-10 at the Sewall Center Arena at RMU’s Moon Township campus.
Approximately 845 students will earn bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees this year: 225 at the graduate ceremony on Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m., and 620 the following morning, Saturday, May 10, at 9:30. The keynote speaker at the graduate ceremony will be Carol R. Brown, former CEO and president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Delivering the keynote address at the undergraduate ceremony will be Robert F. “Bobby” Vagt, chairman of Rice Energy and former president of the Heinz Endowments. Brown and Vagt each will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Robert Morris.
Brown headed the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust from 1986-2000, and under her leadership the Trust created a 14-block arts and entertainment center in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh – the Cultural District. This entailed the renovation of the Benedum, Byham, and Harris theaters, the construction of the O’Reilly Theater, and the opening of the Wood Street Galleries. The result was the transformation of the Penn-Liberty corridor from the seedy home of pornographic bookstores into one of the city’s crown jewels.
Vagt joined Rice Energy, headquartered in Canonsburg, Pa., in January, ending a six-year tenure as president of the Heinz Endowments. An ordained pastor, Vagt served for 10 years as the president of his alma mater, Davidson College in North Carolina. His career in business also included stints as president and chief operating officer of Seagull Energy, president and CEO of Global Natural Resources, and president and chief operating officer of Adobe Resources. His varied career also includes time spent as a prison psychology and a prison warden.
Also set to speak at RMU’s undergraduate commencement ceremony will be graduating senior Chauncey Alexander, president of the RMU Class of 2014.
