  Academic Policies

Undergraduate Change of Major/Program Policy 

Students are eligible to change their major/program if they are in good academic standing. Some programs may have specific admission criteria. Current programs with specific criteria are Accounting, Education, Engineering, Finance, and Nursing.

Criteria to enter the Education major:

  1. Education majors are evaluated on an individual basis according to current Pennsylvania Department of Education standards.
  2. All students are admitted to the education programs on a conditional basis.
  3. Any student not meeting these criteria will have his/her credentials reviewed by an admissions committee comprised of the Dean of Enrollment Services and the academic department head offering the education program.

Criteria to enter the Engineering major:

To receive full (unconditional) admission to Robert Morris' School of Engineering, a new freshman student must satisfy one of the following academic criteria:

  1. A minimum SAT score of 600 (26 ACT) in the Mathematics section and a high school GPA minimum of 3.40 on a 4.00 scale.
  2. A minimum SAT score of 640 (28 ACT) in the Mathematics section and a high school GPA minimum of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.
  3. A minimum SAT score of 680 (30 ACT) in the Mathematics section and a high school GPA minimum of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.

To receive conditional acceptance to the Robert Morris' School of Engineering, a new freshman must meet one of the following academic criteria:

  1. A minimum SAT score of 550 (23 ACT) in the Mathematics section, and a high school GPA minimum of 3.40 on a 4.00 scale.
  2. A minimum SAT score of 600 (26 ACT) in the Mathematics section, and a high school GPA minimum of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.

To receive full (unconditional) acceptance to Robert Morris' School of Engineering, a new transfer student must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Meet unconditional new freshman academic criteria.
  2. A 3.0 or higher grade in an approved University level calculus or physics class, and a combined University GPA minimum of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  3. Holder of an ABET accredited degree (2-year or 4-year) in engineering or engineering technology, with a combined University GPA minimum of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.

To receive conditional acceptance to Robert Morris' School of Engineering, a new transfer student must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Meet conditional new freshman academic criteria with an overall combined university GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  2. Achieve a 3.0 or higher GPA in an approved university level algebra and/or trigonometry class, with an overall combined university GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.

To receive admission to Robert Morris' School of Engineering as a continuing student desiring to change majors, a student must meet the following academic criteria:

  1. Meet unconditional new freshman academic criteria as well as have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or above as a Robert Morris student.

Conditional Acceptance for Change of Major

  1. Meet conditional new freshman academic criteria as well as have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above as a Robert Morris University student.

Attaining Unconditional Status After Being Conditionally Accepted

To attain unconditional status, the student must complete 30 credits (after being conditionally accepted) of the appropriate RMU curriculum with a GPA (calculated for the 30 hours) of a 2.7 or higher.

Criteria to enter the Accounting or Finance majors:

  1. Must have earned a "C" grade or better in each math, accounting, or finance course attempted at Robert Morris University. Must have completed at least 9 credits of any combination of math/accounting/finance.
  2. Must have earned a "C" grade or better in CO120 and/or CO121, if applicable.
  3. Must have earned at least a 2.20 CQPA at the time the major change is requested.
  4. Must have completed at least 15 credits of course work at Robert Morris.

Criteria to enter the Nursing major

If 24 or fewer credits:

  1. A current RMU GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 with 3.0 in science courses
  2. High School GPA greater than or equal to 3.0
  3. SAT greater than or equal to 1000 combined for Math and Verbal or a composite ACT of 22 or higher
  4. Two letters of reference from people qualified to judge characteristics and habits in either a work or school environment. Letters should be professional and not be from relatives or friends.
  5. A 300- to 600-word essay on why you have chosen to be a nurse

If more than 24 credits:

  1. A current RMU GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 with 3.0 in science courses.
  2. Two letters of reference from people qualified to judge characteristics and habits in either a work or school environment. Letters should be professional and not be from relatives or friends.
  3. A 300- to 600-word essay on why you have chosen to become a nurse.
