Robert Morris University was founded as the Pittsburgh School of Accountancy in 1921, which reflects a long history of offering accounting education programs at the University. Today, the Department of Accounting and Taxation offers academic programs leading to the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with a concentration in accounting; an integrated 156-credit BSBA/MBA, and a Master of Science in Taxation.

Degree programs offered by the Department provide students with both a solid technical foundation and skills needed to develop a successful career in accounting and business. Accounting degree programs prepare students for careers in public accounting, private industry, non-profit organizations, or the government. Students graduating from the integrated BSBA/MBA degree program meet the 150-hour educational requirement to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination. Graduates are also prepared to take the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) examinations.

Many accounting students compete for-credit academic internships as part of their degree programs. Internships provide an excellent way for accounting students to apply what they learn in the classroom to a practice setting.  Firms and companies that employ accounting interns, and graduates include: Allegheny Technologies, Bayer, BNY Mellon, Calgon Carbon Corporation, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, General Nutrition, Horovitz, Ruday & Roteman, KPMG, PNC, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Rue 21, Schneider Downs, as well as other leading firms and companies in the Pittsburgh area.

The Department sponsors the Association of Future Accountants (AFA), which provides students with opportunities to learn from outside speakers, network with accounting professionals, engage in community service, and interact with fellow RMU students and faculty.
