Campbell is the third recipient of this annual award, which goes to one alumni who has graduated in the past 10 years from Penn State with a degree at any level in electrical engineering. The award is given to an individual who has "demonstrated outstanding technical excellence resulting in significant accomplishments as well as showing great potential for continued success in their field. In addition, the individual should have solid extra-curricular leadership activities having a positive influence on others and role model opportunities." The selection committee cited Campbell's publications in laser research, service as a director of a nonprofit that restored the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences, teaching experience, and educational outreach activities as factors in their decision. Campbell earned a M.S. in electrical engineering from Penn State in 2003, and an engineering Ph.D. from RMU in 2008. He joined the RMU faculty in 2011.
