ELIT1050 - Readng Lit:Classics/Cntr Trad
Summer 2018

This course (Reading Literature: Classics and Counter-Traditions) teaches students the processes of close reading, analysis, and interpretation of literature and invites students to make connections between literature and their experiences. Students learn to distinguish between reading for comprehension and reading for pleasure, to recognize key principles of storytelling, and to distinguish types of literary works. Introducing students to texts that are international and multicultural in scope as well as to Western literature, the course focuses on the social processes and literary qualities that affect how particular works come to be considered "classics."
Prerequisite: CSEN1010 (COSK1220) or CSEN1000 (COSK1201)

ELIT1050 IReading Lit: Classics/CNTR Traditions is part of the FLEAP program and is scheduled between May 13 through May 26, 2019. As the Harry Potter novels show, the extraordinary is all around us. It waits just around the corner, behind an old building, or inside a locked cupboard. This course connects the familiar Harry Potter stories with classic literature, the history of witchcraft, and the human need to tell stories to make sense of the unbelievable events that surround us in everyday life.If you are interested in taking this course, contact the study abroad unit of the Center for Global Engagement or email at studyabroad@rmu.edu.
