MATH6000 - Elem Math Teacher Leadership I
Fall 2016 The purpose of this course is to support the building of learning communities within local school districs using a variety of research based tools including: 1. Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI) a curriculum designed to help teachers think through the major ideas of K-6 mathematics beyond arithmetic and examine how children develop these ideas. 2. The Mathematical Tasks Framework which is a representation of how the types of mathematical problems affect classroom instruction. 3. The Regional K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Framework which organizes the Pennsylvania Acedemic Standards for Mathematics to focus attention on a few "big ideas" of mathematics at each grade level. This course is intended for elementary certified teachers and will meet for five full days and five half days. 3 Credits |
MATH6010 - Practicum Tchng Math With Tech
Fall 2016 This course is designed to train students in the use of computer software, CD-ROM technology, and the graphing calculator for the teaching of mathematics and to allow these students to act as technology assistants in computer laboratories and as trainers of math tutors. Emphasis is placed on the use of the TI-83 graphing calculator in algebra, calculus, and finance, on the use of Excel software in statistics, and on CD-ROM technology used in elementary algebra. Training in the use of the equation editor in Microsoft Word will also be provided. Students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of tutor training and/or computer lab assisting and to review current mathematics software packages for secondary and post-secondary settings. MATH6020 - Elementary Math Tch Ldshp II
Fall 2016 The purpose of this course is to continue to support the building of learning communities within local school districts using a variety of research based tools including: 1. Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI) a curriculum designed to help teachers think through the major ideas of K-6 mathematics beyond arithmetic and examine how children develop these ideas. 2. The THinking Through a Lesson Protocol (TTAL) which is a tool for planning and evaluating lessons and their effectiveness. 3. The Regional K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Framework which organizes the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics to focus attention on a few "big ideas" of mathematics at each grade level. This course is intended for elementary certified teachers and will meet for five full days and five half days. Prerequisite: MATH6000 3 Credits |
MATH6070 - Trig/Calc: Adv Tpcs/Pedog Stra
Fall 2016 This course is recommended for secondary certified teachers hoping to gain a deeper understanding of content and pedagogical techniques in trigonometry and calculus. The National Council of Teachers of Mathmatics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and the Pennsylvania State Standards for Mathematics are a major focus. The topics covered include triangle trigonometry and applications, unit circle trigonometry and applications, useful trigonometric identities, the derivative and applications, the integral and applications, sequences and series, non-rectangular cooridnate systems and parametric equations. The graphing calculator (TI83) and other technology will be used throughout the course to foster discovery and to gain insights inot the fundamental concepts. 3 Credits |
MATH6080 - Alg/Geom: Adv Tpcs/Pedog Stra
Fall 2016 This course is recommended for secondary cerified teachers hoping to gain a deeper understanding of content and pedagogical techniques in algebra and geometry. The National Council of Teachers of Mathemeatics, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, and the Pennsylvania State Standards for Mathematics are a major focus. The topics covered include Real and Complex numbers, functions, equations, integers, and polynomials, number system structures, congruence, distance, and similarity, trigonometry, area and volume, axiomatics and Euclidean Geometry. The graphing calculator (TI83) and other technology will be used throughout the course of foster discovery and to gain insights into the fundamental concepts. Prerequisites: MATH2170 and graduate standing. 3 Credits |
MATH6100 - Sec Math Teacher Leadership I

Video Cases for Mathematics Professional Development (VCMPD) which is a case-based methodology to investigate the complexities of mathematics teaching and learning that arise in real classroom situations. 2. The Mathematical Tasks Framework which is a representation of how the types of mathematical problems affect classroom instruction. 3. The Regional K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Framework which organizes the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics to focus attention on a few "big ideas" of mathematics at each grade level. MATH6420 - Diff Equations & Math Modeling
Fall 2016 This is a course for graduate students in applied mathematics, mathematics education, and engineering management. The course content is the theory and application of ordinary differential eqations (ODE's). The course will present a variety of solution techniques for ODE's, including both analytical and numerical methods. Applications to mathematical modeling will be described and developed. Credit will not be given to those who have taken MATH3420-Differential Equaitons. 3 Credits |
