MGMT2000 - Management Theory and Practice

This course is the foundation course for management majors (course code replaces MG303). The course traces the development of management thought and practice from pre- Industrial Revolution to preparation for Century 2000. The course presents the shift in management paradigms and legal requirements; the changes in organizational structures; and the evolution of management theories. Creating Workplace and Personal Value aims to assist students in identifying the attributes of one's personal brand and then applying it to the entrepreneurial mindset to create value in the workplace. Innovation is a process that occurs from the inside out. Our capabilities, passions, personalities, and traits - the intrinsic dimensions of who we are - shape how we reimagine the world around us and create new opportunities. Organizations and firms are looking for those who will make their systems, people, and environment better than when they arrived. Are you that person who creates value? Does the world know? The purpose of this course is to equip you with the skills by which 1) to identify one's personal attributes which set you apart from the talent market, 2) to understand one's unique approach to creating value entrepreneurially as informed by such attributes, and 3) to develop and articulate a personal brand based upon this discovery. This course will take you through the journey of recognizing your unique set of values, skills, and traits, and guide you in developing your personal brand of creating value based upon these distinct combinations of attributes. The course will then immerse you in the actual practice of activating an entrepreneurial mindset and action - introducing you to tools and concepts by which you can apply your individual approach to the entrepreneurship method of creating opportunity, problem- solving, mobilizing resources, and generating change and impact. This course is an introduction to the concepts, principles, problems, and practices of operations management. Emphasis is on managerial processes for efficient and effective operations in both manufacturing and service companies. Topics include operations strategy, process design, capacity planning, facilities location and design, forecasting, production scheduling, inventory control, quality assurance, and project management. It is expected that by the end of the course students will be able to apply operational knowledge and techniques to real-world problems and scenarios. It is strongly recommended that students take STAT2110: Statistics or MATH2040: Finite Math & Applied Calculus before taking this course.

This course stresses that the acquisition, training, and maintenance of human resource assets involves both a process and a partnership between managers and human resource specialists. Together the instructor and the students will look at the arguments of its proponents as well as its critics. Regardless of how one might feel about the duties and obligations of companies to the broader community, as opposed to just meeting the obligations and wishes of the company owners, dealing with the issue of CSR is a fact of life for large companies, and they ignore it at their peril as a well-led consumer boycott can do irreparable harm to a company.

Sustainability-minded organizations are confronted with at least two categories of priority-setting issues: which sustainability projects to pursue; and, how to evaluate a project that requires investment but improves the environmental footprint against a project that does little for the environment but reduces costs. This course provides the user with the measurement, analysis, improvement, and control tools required to sift through project contributions to sustainability improvement and the associated costs.

Students will examine and debate challenges faced by individuals at workplace, including gender (in)equality, gender expectations, parenting, work life balance, sexual harassment, and other diversity issues in the workplace. This course is intended to acquaint students with the key concepts used in the HR field to address diversity issues related to gender, work life balance, employment rights and practices. After completing the course, students are expected to be equipped with the basic HR knowledge and the critical thinking skills to lead in a diverse workplace.

MRMG4900 - Capstone Simulation

The overall objective of this course is to develop your professional business skills. Through computer simulation, we will place you into a very realistic international business setting where you will run a company for three years in compressed time (twelve rounds of decision-making). You will work closely with a team of fellow students to manage a highly complex and integrated business. Personal leadership and strong interpersonal skills will be necessary to succeed. The capstone simulation is where the student learns to put the pieces of the entire business core together. Here, the student develops the skills to integrate the entire business discipline. Throughout the exercise, you will receive guidance and feedback from professional coaches. Their job is to challenge your business thinking and help you to become a good team player and business manager.
Prerequisites: You must have already completed CSCM 1030, FINA3000, MGMT2000, MARK2000 and 90 earned credits prior to registering for this course.
