Encourage Student Engagement
Champion Student Career Readiness Through Engagement!
This page presents ways for you to encourage students to engage in programs, experiences and opportunities that support their career development.
- Refer Students to the Career and Professional Development Center’s webpage
-
Faculty and staff can champion the services offered by the Career Development Center to RMU students. Encourage students to take advantage of these resources early in their academic journeys. The most successful students are those who start focusing on their careers from their first year. For more information, direct students to the Career Development Center's Students webpage.
- Support the Career and Professional Development Center’s Events
-
The Career Development Center organizes two career fairs and a variety of career-related events and workshops throughout the academic year, including employer-led events. You can support the center by announcing and promoting these events in your classes. Alternatively, consider incorporating career fair or event attendance as an assignment or extra credit opportunity. Faculty and staff are also encouraged to attend these events to network with employers, forge connections, and gain insights into various industries.
- Encourage students to participate in our Career Readiness Academies
-
The Career and Professional Development Center offers a series of academies available to all RMU students, that provide practical life and professional skills beyond the scope of traditional coursework. These academies support the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) eight career readiness competencies.

- Promote the Academic Internship Program
-
The Career and Professional Development Center facilitates the Academic Internship Program for most majors. Direct students to our webpage to learn more about the program, criteria by major, link to the appropriate forms and CPDC contact information by academic school.
- Provide guidance to employers
-
If an employer contacts you about engaging with RMU, please refer them to the Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) and our Employer webpage. We will handle the necessary approval in Handshake, which is mandatory for all employers wanting to connect with RMU students through the CPDC. Additionally, we will share the opportunity with appropriate students and seek other ways to strengthen the relationship with the employer.
- Direct students to our resume writing resources
-
Encourage students to participate in the “Develop Your Resume” program, emphasizing that a resume is a student’s professional document showcasing their skills, education, experiences, and accomplishments. It is their personal story tailored for potential employers, universities, and other professional connections.
- Request a Handshake Account
-
Faculty and staff can create a student user account in Handshake, so they can explore the system first-hand and advise students on relevant opportunities and events. If interested in an account contact the Career and Professional Development Center via email: careercenter@rmu.edu
