It examines the nature and causes of crime, criminal law, constitutional safeguards, and the organization and operation of the criminal justice system including the police, courts, jails, prisons, probation and parole, community corrections, and juvenile justice. It briefly covers the history of crime in America and includes relevant terminology. This course places an emphasis on career opportunities in the criminal justice system.

This introductory level course provides a review of contemporary institutional and community-based correctional systems including jails, prisons, probation, parole, and alternative sanctioning. The course examines how punishment justifications impact the policy and procedures in juvenile and adult correctional systems. Specific attention is given to identification of evidence-based practices and programs in all aspects of the corrections system.

CRMJ2020 - Policing

This course is a comprehensive examination of the first and most-visible part of the Criminal Justice System, law enforcement. Various policing eras and the prevailing policing philosophies of their time are discussed, including the current department structures and police administration systems in the US and abroad. The responsibilities, pressures, and constitutional limits law enforcement professionals face during the investigative process are also examined. Recent developments in both law enforcement and larger society and how these have affected both police tactics and police culture are also examined.

CRMJ2030 - Juvenile Deliquency

This course examines how the criminal justice system is altered when the suspect is a juvenile offender. Different theories of juvenile delinquency are discussed, as are the impact of drugs, gangs, and other social institutions on the individual and larger trends in delinquent behavior. Differences in policing, prosecution, punishment, and prevention for juveniles compared with adults are examined.

This course explores fundamental philosophical thoughts on morality and ethics and how these belief systems relate to ethical requirements for policing. The course begins with a look at early philosophy exploring the meaning and development of ethics. Thess include writings from Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Confucius, Buddha, Aquinas and Kant leading to our current Judeo/Christian understanding of ethics and morality. Students will then delve into the meaning and application of ethics a it applies to policing. Classroom instruction will consist of lectures, reinforced by the text, videos, maps, discussion, and supplemental readings.

CRMJ3010 - Community Based Corrections

This course examines the growing trend in the US criminal justice system of having convicted offenders serve their sentences out of jails and prisons and on the streets with the general public. The history and philosophy behind this trend is examined as is the effect of these various alternatives to incarceration on: 1.) recidivism, 2.) the lives and outcomes for offenders, 3.) diverse groups, and 4.) corrections professionals and organizations.

This course offers a critical look at the criminal justice system as it pertains to sex crimes. It examines areas concerned with sex offenders, victims, and sex crime reform. This course utilizes both a text book and current academic research to look broadly at the types of sex offenders and the crimes impact on victims. Additionally the course will investigate treatment programs and punishment relating to U.S. and state policy. Lastly societal response to sex offenders will be examined.

CRMJ3030 - White-Collar Crime

This course is an in-depth analysis of white-collar crime, crimes that can only be committed by individuals or organizations because of their social position. Multiple types of these crimes will be examined for their similarities and differences with other types of criminal behavior. Evolving definitions, trends and public attitudes about white-collar crime will be examined over the past century. The course will also discuss policy implications of fighting these actions in the criminal versus civil courts.

CRMJ3040 - Criminal Intelligence Analysis

Crime analysis is the systematic examination of multi-faceted crime data. The indentification, collection, storage, modification and dissemination of crime data enables law enforcement agencies to identify crime trends; determine long term strategic trends; and improve operational and administrative effectiveness. Criminal analyst should master the ability to write, brief and disseminate findings to law enforcement stateholders clearly and concisely. This course will provide an overview of these processes. The course will involve basic familiarization of a GIS (Geographic Information System) software program that is designed for graphical presentation and analytical discernment.

This class focuses on five areas critical to a successful investigation: analysis, evidence, legal procedures, evidence collection, and forensics. This course provides an introduction to the concepts of research and theory as related to the study of crime, deviance, and the criminal justice system. Specifically, this course is a survey of the causes and effects of criminality (sociological, psychological, biological, etc.) and the means taken to cope with criminal behavior. Emphasis is placed on the social context of crime, including examination of how different types of crimes relate to theory. Finally, the course will look ahead into the future of criminal theory.

This is an introductory course to criminalistics which explores the history and scope of forensic science. Criminalistics is the application of science to those criminal and civil laws that are enforced by police agencies in a criminal justice system. The scope of this course includes discovery at a crime scene, the most important location of evidence; physical evidence; analytical techniques for organic and inorganic materials; forensic toxicology; firearms, ammunition, unique tool marks, and various impressions (e.g., shoe prints, fabric properties, and bloodstains).
