Borderline Bicycle Tour
9:00 AM
Our bicycle rides are a great way to explore Western Pennsylvania and beyond. The rides are hosted by Leo McCarthy, Army veteran and retired Moon Township police chief. Leo works hard to plan our rides, peppering them with an ounce of fun and a dash of history.
The rides are social in nature and limited to a small group of 15 riders. We take our time and enjoy the camaraderie. These rides are for veterans and currently serving military and a guest over 18 years of age.
This 16-mile ride was originally scheduled for June, but we had to postpone due to weather. It begins on the Panhandle Trail about 20 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport. We will begin our trek at the historic Burgettstown Train Station which is now a restaurant/snack bar. We will have a photo opportunity at the new trailhead park that includes a large Statue of Liberty replica. Enjoy calming views of the meandering waters of Harmon Creek as well as several large ponds. Be on the lookout for wild turkeys and deer. Riders are welcome to bring an apple or carrot for our equine friends at a trailside pasture.
We will take a quick rest at the PA/WV state line before entering West Virginia and stop at the Collier’s Station Trailhead. There we will see the historic marker commemorating the World Championship Boxing match between Champion Joe Goss and Patty Ryan which lasted 87 rounds.
Interested riders are welcome to join us for lunch afterward, at their own expense, at Walden’s Restaurant on the trailhead.
Meet up details will be provided the day before the ride.
