Our twelve-credit certificate program in game design aims to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge required to create games, gamify experiences, facilitate play, analyze playability, and effectiveness in communicating through play.

Upon completion of the Game Design Certificate, students should be able to:

  • Create additional artifacts or experiences using purely digital or mixed digital/analog tools while establishing efficient workflows
  • Develop ideas / concepts / and rules for games, and then implement, and iterate upon those to ensure a playable experience
  • Effectively communicate the rules of play, how games may be used to persuade, test hypotheses, introduce concepts, practice skills, and assess proficiency
  • Engage in critical and analytical play testing – considering both parameters that improve the game experience and the delivery of the underlying message, call to action, or user skill being evaluated
  • Demonstrate knowledge about the concepts, history, terminology and issues related to games and applied play experiences
  • Implement the appropriate motivation framework for a given meaningful game experience or domain application
