Department Criteria for Internships
Programs that require internships:
- Engineering
- BFA in Graphic Design
- BFA in Cinema and Photography
- BA in English
Rockwell School of Business: Academic Major Requirements (Undergraduate)
Accounting Concentration
- Department Head Approval
- Minimum GPA: 2.5
- Most internships will be approved for 3 credits if they meet the following criteria:
- The internship has a valid job description or additional information supplied by the employer that clearly states what professional accounting or taxation skills students will learn.
- The internship employer has agreed to share or help with student intern evaluations.
- In general, the maximum number of credits per internship is 6. Occasionally, an internship can be approved for more than 6 credits at Department Head’s discretion. For an internship to be approved for more than 3 credits, the following criteria must be met:
- The internship has a valid job description that clearly states what advanced professional accounting or taxation skills students will learn.
- The internship employer has agreed to share or help with student intern evaluations.
- Learning experiences must include significant emerging technologies training provided by the employer. (Emerging technology means new or continuing developed technologies/tools used in practice.)
- The student has to commit to participating and presenting in an internship expo organized by the department.
- Minimum courses in the concentration completed or taken concurrently at RMU – One (1), has to be either ACCT3030 “Intermediate Accounting I” or ACCT 3110 “Taxes I” except for the VITA internship.
- Registration deadlines are the end of the fourth week of the fall and spring semesters and the end of the second week of the summer session.
- In addition to faculty supervisor requirements, students must complete the end-of-internship evaluation survey before credits are awarded.
Finance Concentration
- Minimum GPA: 2.5.
- Minimum Number of Credits: 72
- These credits must be completed prior to the start of the academic internship
- Minimum Number of Courses in Major: two (2)
Management Concentration
- Minimum GPA: 2.25 overall
- Minimum Number of Credits: 30
- Completion of MGMT2000 (formerly MGMT3100) Management Theory and Practice course
Marketing Concentration
- The following course is required prior to the start of the academic internship: MARK2000 - Marketing Interconnected World or Principles of Marketing
- Department Head Approval
Sport Management Concentration
- Minimum GPA: 2.25
- Minimum Number of Credits: 45
- Minimum Number of Courses in Major: two (2)
- Any changes must be approved by the Program Director of Sport Management
School of Communication and Media: Academic Major Requirements (Undergraduate)
- The BFAs in Graphic Design and Cinema and Photography and the BAs in English require an internship.
- The BA in Graphic Design and BA in Cinema and Photography do NOT require an internship, but students are encouraged to complete one.
Cinema and Photography Majors
- Must have completed a minimum of three Communication Skills classes
- Must have completed the second-level course(s) in the student's major
- ARTM2451 Directing for the Camera
- ARTM3300 Digital Photo
- Undergraduate transfer students must have completed 12 credits including one 3-credit Media Arts course (one full-time semester) prior to applying to the program
- All academic internships must have a qualified on-site supervisor (practicing experienced professional in the internship field)
Communication Majors
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
- Minimum Number of Credits: 60
- Undergraduate transfer students must have completed at least 12 credits at RMU prior to applying to the Academic Internship Program
- Must have completed the four (4) required Communication Skills courses (from the RMU Core)
- Must have completed at least three (3) courses directly related to their Major
- All academic Internship applications must be approved by the Internship Coordinator
English Majors
- Minimum Number of Credits: 60
- Minimum Number of Courses in Major: three (3)
- The following major courses are required prior to the start of the academic internship:
- ENGL 2000: The Study of Literature
- ENGL 3010: Engl Grammar & Editing
Graphic Design Majors
- Must have completed a minimum of three Communication Skills classes
- Must have completed the second-level course(s) in the student's major
- ARTM3110 Design Studio I
- Undergraduate transfer students must have completed 12 credits including one 3-credit Media Arts course (one full-time semester) prior to applying to the program
- All academic internships must have a qualified on-site supervisor (practicing experienced professional in the internship field)
Organizational Leadership Majors
- Minimum GPA: 2.5
- Minimum Number of Credits: 69
- Minimum Number of RMU credits: 12
- Must have completed the following:
- ORGL – 12 credits in the major
UX/UI Majors
- Minimum GPA: 2.5
- Minimum Number of Credits prior to the beginning of the internship: 60
- Comm Skills 1-4 including CSCM2040
- Undergraduate transfer students must have completed 12 credits including one 3-credit Media Arts course (one full-time semester) prior to applying to the program
- All academic internships must have a qualified on-site supervisor (practicing experienced professional in the internship field)
School of Data Intelligence and Technology: Academic Major Requirements (Undergraduate& Graduate)
- Criminal Justice Majors: Please consult with your academic department for information regarding the practicum requirement.
Actuarial Science Majors
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
- Minimum Number of Credits: 60 (including transferred credits)
- Minimum Number of Courses in Major: four (4)
- ASCI2010 Introduction to Actuarial Science
- MATH2070 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
- MATH2170 Calculus with Analytic Geometry II
- STAT3140 Probability/Math Statistics I
- Students cannot earn more than six internship credits per semester and a maximum of nine credits at RMU
Computer Information Systems - Undergraduate Programs / Bachelor of Science (B.S.): Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics Majors Minimum GPA: 2.5
- Minimum Number of Credits: 60
- Minimum Number of Courses in Major: three (3)
- Undergraduate transfer students must have completed 12 credits including one 3-credit INFS course (one full-time semester) prior to applying to the program
- Must have open electives or one INFS elective
- Credits as additional coursework are not permitted
- Updated job description must be provided each term if the internship covers multiple terms
- Internships at current or past employers are not acceptable (unless a change of department and supervisor will take place; e.g. a former accountant becomes an IT tech.)
Computer Information Systems - Graduate Programs / Master of Science (M.S.): Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Healthcare Analytics, and Information Systems Management Majors
Student must be in good standing
- Graduate students must have completed nine (9) credits at Robert Morris University
- Maximum of nine (9) graduate internship credits may be earned in a 36-credit master's degree program (C.O.I.S. degree program excluded)
- Maximum of three (3) graduate internship credits may be earned in a 30-credit master's degree program
- Maximum of three (3) graduate internship credits may be earned by students enrolled in the Integrated BS/MS in Computing Program
Mathematics Majors
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
- Minimum Number of Credits: 60 (including transferred credits)
- Minimum Number of Courses in Major: four (4)
- MATH2070 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
- MATH2170 Calculus with Analytic Geometry II
- MATH3090 Calculus with Analytic Geometry III
- STAT3140 Probability/Math Statistics I or
- MATH4000 Discrete Mathematics
School of Engineering and Science: Academic Major Requirements (Undergraduate)
Biology Majors
- Minimum GPA: 2.5
- Minimum number of credits: 64
- Must have all introductory science courses on 1000 and 2000 levels or by Department Head recommendation
Engineering Majors
- Minimum GPA: 2.0
- Minimum number of credits: 64
- Must have completed/transferred the following courses:
- Calculus sequence: MATH2070, MATH2170 & MATH3090
- Basic Engineering (at least three of the following): ENGR1010, ENGR1610, ENGR2080, ENGR2140, ENGR2160, ENGR2180
- Programming: INFS2184 or equivalent
- Credits: A student must earn a minimum of 3 credits (150 hours) of Engineering Practice in order to meet graduation requirements. In view of the specialized nature of engineering assignments - this may be achieved with a single internship experience or in installments as appropriate.
- The Academic Department Head or his/her designate will make the determination.
Environmental Science
School of Education and Social Sciences
