11/08/2024: VIVID Internship Application for 2025

Overview & Objective

The Virtual Internship and Varied Innovative Demonstrations (VIVID) Coalition comprised of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Augusta University, University of Arizona, and Florida International University has internship opportunities available for college undergraduates. The virtual internships will be offered to address the problem of helping students translate academic learning to cybersecurity practice and competency in a work role or job as well as the opportunity to earn as they learn.

Important Information

  1. Interns will work 20 hours per week for 8 weeks at $18.00 per hour
  2. Internship is 20 Jan - 14 Mar 2025
  3. Remote Work
  4. Minimum grade point average of 3.0
  5. Must have completed at least one year toward a cybersecurity-related academic program

10/14/2024: RMU Student Presentation at NCEC

James Bonacci,  an NSF SFS student scholar in RMU's accelerated BS/MS Cybersecurity program, was invited and funded by the national Information Security Research Education (INSuRE) program to present at the 2024 National Cybersecurity Education Colloquium (NCEC) in St. Louis, Missouri during October 7-10, 2024. The presentation was based on a guided team research project on AI/neural network models for security completed in the spring semester by 4 RMU NSF SFS student scholars (James Bonacci, Peyton Lutchkus, Reese Martin, and Rob Pava). Dr. Bradford Kline from the National Security Agency (NSA) served as the government mentor, and Dr. Ping Wang was the RMU faculty supervisor for the team. Thanks to RMU Provost Dr. Joseph Zimmer for his attendance at NCEC in support of RMU cybersecurity programs and students!

05/01/2024: INSuRE (Information Security Research Education) Summer 2024 Workshops

Description: In an attempt to provide research education and experience to cybersecurity students from CAE institutions, we are offering two separate intense INSuRE+E research workshops in Summer 2024. Modeled after the INSuRE+E program, teams of students will be working on an applied research problem of national interest mentored by a problem mentor from a government agency. Supervision is provided by a faculty member from a CAE-R institution.

Eligibility Requirement: Students who are US citizens or permanent residents who are entering the 3rd year or above of their undergraduate studies or early MS/PhD students may apply to one or both sessions listed below.

Funding Support for Students:
Students will receive travel support and a stipend of $4,050 for each 3-week session to cover room and board.

10/24/2023: 2024 Future Computing Summer Internship at NSA

For the 3rd consecutive year, NSA will offer the Future Computing Summer Internship Opportunity. Applications will be opened from October 30, 2023, to January 3, 2024. Details can be found here: https://www.lps.umd.edu/2024-future-computing-summer-internship/

The Advanced Computing Systems Research Program (ACS) in the NSA Research Directorate is joining with their counterparts in the High-Performance Computing Solutions (HPCS) and Operations (OPS) organizations to provide a select number of undergraduate students an exciting 9-week internship opportunity.  ACS is part of the Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) and is located in the Research Park building complex adjacent to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

During the Future Computing Summer Internship, the students will work with technical experts from NSA in small team settings and conduct hands-on technical work. Under their mentorship and using the same HPC systems as ACS researchers, the students will contribute to projects in support of the NSA HPC mission.

This internship experience is ideal for students who will be completing their junior year (Spring 2025 graduates), and is well-suited for students in math, computer science, computer engineering, or related STEM fields.

Conference Theme: Designing K12 Learning Experiences to Build a Diverse and Skilled Cybersecurity Workforce

The NICE K12 Cybersecurity Education Conference Call for Proposals opens today and will close on July 14, 2023 at 11:59PM PST. The 9th annual conference will be held on December 4-5, 2023, at the Hilton Phoenix Resort at The Peak in Phoenix, Arizona. There will also be pre-conference workshops on December 2-3.

The NICE K12 Conference Planning Committee seeks proposals from a diverse array of organizations and individuals with different perspectives, including K12 educators, students, school counselors, higher education faculty, employers and practitioners, non-profits, curriculum providers, research centers, and training and certification providers. 05/19/2023: Cybersecurity Faculty Development Program - UCCS Led Coalition

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Cybersecurity Programs Office received a grant from the U.S. National Security Agency to educate, train and develop faculty in cybersecurity. UCCS will serve as a strategic partner for a consortium of educational institutions to deliver a comprehensive, programmatic approach to cybersecurity faculty development.

Courses for existing faculty, instructors, and grad students looking to teach will be provided free-of-charge. Graduate student scholarships and travel stipends are available.  Many of the workshops are offering Continuing Education Units.

04/04/2023:  JerseyCTF III Cybersecurity Competition

JerseyCTF is a beginner-friendly Capture the Flag competition that aims to inspire interest in cybersecurity. Hosted by the NJIT ACM and NICC organizations and the NJIT SCI program, it is geared towards students, beginners, and professionals alike. JerseyCTF provides participants with jeopardy-style questions in categories including cryptography, forensics, binary exploitation/reversing, open-source intelligence, and web exploitation. JerseyCTF features a track parallel to the CTF competition, consisting of presentations and panels with renowned speakers from industry and government.

04/03/2023:  Cybersecurity Faculty Fellowship Program

NCyTE is hosting a Faculty Fellowship Program open to college/university students in their final year or recently graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in cybersecurity, who are interested in teaching in a community college setting. The Faculty Fellowship Program will introduce and prepare participants for a career path of teaching cybersecurity in a community college setting. Gain experience in creating lesson plans, syllabi, leading a classroom, and more. We encourage students from underrepresented groups in cybersecurity to apply. Stipend opportunity is available.

12/21/2022: SCADS Summer Research Scholars 2023

The Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS) at NC State is hosting the second annual Summer Conference on Applied Data Science (SCADS) from June 5 – July 28, 2023, on campus in Raleigh, NC. The overarching, multi-year challenge of SCADS is to generate tailored daily reports (TLDRs) for knowledge workers that capture information relevant to their individual objectives and interests.

We are looking for graduate students (recent bachelor’s/master’s graduates and exceptional undergraduates may also apply) to join us as Summer Research Scholars. Positions are full time (40 hours/week) at a rate of $28/hour. In addition, we will provide support for local accommodations and travel, if needed.

The FBI Honors Internship Program (HIP) is the perfect opportunity to set your career in motion. The 10-week, paid internship is ideal for undergraduate students between their junior and senior years, as well as graduate students pursuing a master’s degree, JD, or PhD. The internship is a unique opportunity for students to learn and work alongside our professionals at our Headquarters locations and field offices across the country.

To apply for the Honors Internship Program, applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Attend a U.S. accredited college or university full time as an undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral student. You are not eligible if you graduate before June 5, 2023.

06/06/2022: RMU Students Won Gold and Silver Medals in NCL Spring 2022 Season

Congratulations to two RMU students who won medals from the National Cyber League (NCL) Spring 2022 season competitions! Garrett Flayer (Junior, BS Cybersecurity) won a Gold medal, and Talal Baqazi, (Junior, BS Cybersecurity) won a Silver medal. Dr. Ping Wang, University Professor of Computer Information Systems and Cybersecurity, served as the RMU faculty coach. The NCL competitions provide students with hands-on experience solving real-world cybersecurity challenges.

The White House Internship Program is a public service leadership and development program that provides emerging leaders with an opportunity to gain valuable skills in public service. Interested candidates can find the Program’s online application at WH.gov/intern.

The application for the Fall 2022 session will open on Monday, June 6 and close on Friday, June 24.

Selected applicants will be notified the week of August 8. Program participants must meet at least one of the three following criteria:

03/14/2022: The national CAE program is offering a Class on Advanced Network Security and a Teaching Workshop on Malware Detection. Both offerings are online, and all the teaching materials will be available in a single bundle to download, including, syllabi, presentations, readings, assignments, labs, and assessments. The class on advanced network security is focused on teaching the content, while the teaching workshop on malware detection is focused on preparing faculty to teach the class. The synchronous portion of the hybrid class will be taught on 3 consecutive days for 5 hours each day and the teaching workshop will be taught on 2 consecutive days for 5 hours each day. The online portion of the course will stay open longer where the instructors will be available to answer questions for the participants. Each of the courses will be taught twice. 03/09/2022: NSF Funded Virtual Cyber Career Challenge on March 28, 2022

  • In the Virtual Cyber Career Challenge, students will gain important workforce experience as they work in teams of three on a small network of machines, which they will configure, operate, protect, and defend. Each week students will meet with their instructor for guidance on how to best manage their network and prepare for a penetration test by a red team. At the conclusion of the challenge, students will have additional opportunities to attend a Tech Interview Primer, a Mock Job Fair, and the National Cybersecurity Virtual Career Fair held on September 16.

  • The National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) is to start a NCAE Cyber Games/Competitions this spring for college students at NCAE colleges and universities, including online competitions in regionals and national finals.   • Chris Prada, first-year student in M.S. Cybersecurity, and Zachary Newton, sophomore in B.S. Cybersecurity, have each won a gold medal during the National Cyber League 2021 Fall Season. CISA published a Remediating Microsoft Exchange Vulnerabilities web page that strongly urges all organizations to immediately address the recent Microsoft Exchange Server product vulnerabilities. As exploitation of these vulnerabilities is widespread and indiscriminate, CISA strongly advises organizations follow the guidance laid out in the web page. The guidance provides specific steps for both leaders and IT security staff and is applicable for all sizes of organizations across all sectors.

April 12: Cybersecurity Teaching Workshops
University at Albany, SUNY is starting a training academy in cyber security for faculty through an NSA supported consortium led by the University of Colorado, Cold Springs. Through the academy, we are offering two different courses, i.e.  Information Security Risk Assessment and Introduction to Digital Forensics. Accompanying these courses, we will be offering teaching workshops to help faculty learn how to teach the material. The teaching workshops will discuss both pedagogical techniques as well as the materials that have been provided to teach (presentations, readings, assignments, and assessments). The teaching workshops will be taught with ten hours of synchronous teaching and two weeks of asynchronous learning with online materials. We are offering each of the three classes 3 times (summer 2021, fall 2021, and spring 2022).
